1. Sentence এর headword তথা subject singular হলে verb singular হবে এবং subject plural হলে verb plural হবে।
- The quality of the mangoes ___(be) good.
- Many students ___(be) present there.
- He ___(be) an active student.
- They ___(be) meritorious.
- The color of her eyes ___(be) blue.
2. Subject যদি he, she, it তথা 3rd person singular number হলে present indefinite tense এ main verb এর সাথে s/es যোগ হয়।
- My father ___(make) dinner for us usually.
- The sun ___(move) fast.
- The sub ___(set) in west.
- Rabbi ___(read) Quran daily.
3. And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই বা ততোধিক noun/pronoun কে একত্রে plural subject ধরা হয় এবং verb plural হয়।
- He and I ___(be) friends before that tragedy.
- Pulok and Rubok ___(be) are brothers.
- The pm and the president ___(have) taken revolutionary steps to stop corruption.
Note: তবে একই ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা ভাব নির্দেশ করলে verb singular হয়।
- Bread and butter ___(be) my favorite.
- Slow and steady ___(win) the race.
4. আবার and দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি noun/pronoun বা পদ যদি আলাদা দুটি স্বত্তা নির্দেশ করে তবে এদের পূর্বে the বসে এবং verb plural হয়। কিন্তু একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু নির্দেশ করলে প্রথম পদটির পূর্বেই the বসে এবং verb singular হয়।
- The principal and the secretary of our college ___(be) present.
- The pm and minister ___(have) joined the party.
5. Each, every, any, no, more than one, none/no one, etc. subject বা subject এর অংশ হলে noun/pronoun ও verb singular হয়।
- Each boy and each girl ___(be) present today.
- No bust and no train ___(be) seen.
- No one ___(have) got first prize.
6. Each of (the), one of (the), either of (the), neither of (the), none of (the), etc. এর পর noun/pronoun plural হলেও verb singular হয়।
- One of the boys ___(be) brilliant.
- None of the students ___(have) taken the English book today.
- Each of the persons ___(be) present in the hall.
7. As well as, with, along with, together with, accompanied by, followed by, and + no/not etc. দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি noun এর ক্ষেত্রে প্রথম noun/pronoun অনুযায়ী verb বসে।
- The chairman along with the party members ___(be) present in the meeting.
- He as well his sisters ___(have) visited Cox’s Bazar.
- You or he ___(be) main culprit.
- Neither she nor her sisters ___(have) got that proposal.
8. একক দূরত্ত, পরিমাণ, সময়, ওজন, বয়স, অর্থ ইত্যাদি plural হলেও verb singular হয়।
- Fifty miles ___(be) a long distance.
- Tk. 500 ___(be) spent.
- Twelve years ___(be) Jerry’s age.
9. Infinitive, gerund, verbal noun, clause etc. বাক্যের subject হিসেবে থাকলে verb singular হয়।
- To tell lies ___(be) a great sin.
- Waking in the morning ___(be) good for health.
- The reading of novels ___(be) interesting.
- That you finished the novels ___(be) known to me.
10. Collective noun এর পর সাধারণত singular verb বসে। তবে বিচ্ছিন্নতা বা ভিন্নতা বোঝালে verb plural হয়।
- The jury ___(be) giving it’s verdict today.
- The jury ___(be) divided into two groups.
11. Adjective এর পূর্বে the বসলে তা plural noun হিসেবে কাজ করে এবং verb plural হয়।
- The virtues ___(be) always happy.
- The poor ___(be) born to suffer you may think.
12. News, gallows, innings, advice, scenery, wages, politics, physics, economics, ethics, civics, statistics, Linguistics, Electronics, vegetables etc. কে সাধারণত singular ধরা হয় এবং verb singular হয়। আবার, people, cattle, gentry, folk, police, public, aristocracy etc. কে সাধারণত plural ধরা হয়, তাই verb ও plural হয়।
- The scenery of Cox’s Bazar ___(be) charming.
- The wages of sin ___(be) death.
- Politics ___(be) something nasty.
- The police ___(be) silent spectators.
- Physics ___(be) my favorite subject.
- Economics (be) an important subject.
Note: Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Politics, Ethics, Civics, Statistics etc. সাধারণত academic subject বা field বোঝায়্, তাই verb singular হয়। তবে, তথ্য/পরিসংখ্যান বা numerical data অর্থে Statistics এর পর plural verb বসে।
- The statistics are alarming of this report.
13. Book, magazine, movie, newspaper, country, play etc. এর নাম plural হলেও verb singular হয়।
- The Economic Times ___(be) and Indian English language newspaper.
- The Avengers ___(be) my favorite movie of all time.
14. একাংশ (one third, one fourth) ছাড়া ভগ্নাংশ সর্বদা plural হয় এবং verb ও plural হয়। তবে পরিমাণ বুঝালে verb singular হয়।
- One third of the students ___(be) present.
- Two thirds of the work ___(be) finished.
15. Uncountable and abstract noun সর্বদাই singular হয়, তাই verb ও singular হয়।
- Truthfulness ___(be) a great virtue.
- Knowledge ___(be) power.
- Information ___(be) compared to money.
- The water ___(be) not drinkable at all.
16. Many + a / an এর পর verb singular হয় কিন্তু many / a many এর পর noun ও verb plural হয়।
- Many a rich man ___(live) here.
- Many school dropout girls (be) now financially solvent with the help of Grameen Bank.
Note: In modern English, "a many" is not considered a standard expression and is rarely used.
17. Either...or, Neither...nor, Not only...but also যুক্ত বাক্যে দুটি subject থাকলে, নিকটবর্তী subject-এর সঙ্গে সঙ্গতি রেখে verb বসবে।
- Either he or I (be) responsible.
- Either I or he (be) responsible.
- Neither the teacher nor the students (be) present.
- Not only the students but also the teacher (be) absent.
18. Here / There দিয়ে বাক্য শুরু হলে verb পরবর্তী subject অনুযায়ী হবে। এক্ষেত্রে পরবর্তী subject singular হলে verb singular এবং পরবর্তী subject plural হলে verb plural হবে।
- There is a book on the table.
- There are many books on the table.
- Here comes the bus.
- Here come the players.
19. A number of -> plural verb; The number of -> singular verb; More than one -> singular verb; More than two -> plural verb
- Nowadays, A number of politicians (be) corrupted.
- The number of online teachers (be) increasing.
- More than one student (have) failed.
- More than two students (have) failed.
20. Pair nouns (scissors, trousers, spectacles, pants etc.) singular plural verb গ্রহণ করে। কিন্তু "a pair of" singular verb গ্রহণ করে তবে noun টি Plural হয়।
- My trousers (be) dirty.
- The scissors (be) sharp.
- A pair of trousers is on the bed.
- A pair of scissors is missing.
21. Every / Each + noun + and + every / each + noun এর ক্ষেত্রে verb singular হয়।
- Every boy and every girl is present.
- Each student and each teacher has participated.
22. Who / Which / That যুক্ত বাক্যের ক্ষেত্রে verb antecedent অনুযায়ী হবে।
Note: who / which / that basically যে শব্দকে নির্দেশ করে তা ঐ verb এর antecedent.
- I am one of the boys who play cricket.
- He is the only one of the boys who plays cricket.
23. One and + a half + noun -> singular verb
- One and a half hours is enough.
- One and a half kilograms is sufficient.
24. A lot of / A plenty of / A good deal of / A bunch of / An abundance of / A sea of / A multitude of / A myriad of / A ton of / Loads of / Lots of + noun থাকলে noun এর উপর নির্ভর করে subject বসে।
- A lot of water (be) wasted. is
- A lot of students (be) absent. are
