Rules of Completing Sentences in English

1. Use of "so that / in order that"

★ এর অর্থ যাতে বা যার ফলে।

★ so that দ্বারা হিসেবে দুটি clause এর মাঝখানে বসে এবং এর পরবর্তী clause টি সাধারণত কাজের উদ্দেশ্য নির্দেশ করে।
★ so that এর পরে sub+can/could/may/might/+(n't)+verb এর present form বসে।

Structure: sub+verb+so that+sub+can/could+v1

যেমন: We eat so that we can get energy.

We work hard so that we can shine in life.

He went to market in order that he could/might buy some vegetables.

The students came to the school library so that they could borrow books.

2. Use of "It is time/ It is high time"

★ এর অর্থ এখনই উপযুক্ত সময়।
★ কোনো কাজ করার সময় ইতোমধ্যে পার হয়ে গেছে, আর দেরি না করে এখনই কাজটি শুরু করা উচিত এরূপ অর্থে It is time/It is high time ব্যবহৃত হয়।
★ It is high time/It is time এর পর subject থাকলে উক্ত subject এর পরবর্তী verb টির past form (v2) হয়।
★ It is high time এর পর subject না থাকলে it is high time + infinitive হয়। (to+v1)

যেমন: It is high time students gained knowledge.
It is high time you learned your lessons.
It is time to go
It is time to quarrel.
It is high time for you to go to college.

3. Use of "Since [time / সময় নির্দেশক]"

★ Since কখনও কখনও সময় নির্দেশ করে।
★ সাধারণত অতীতের কোনো সময় থেকে বর্তমান সময়ের পর্যায়কাল বুঝাতে conjunction হিসেবে since বসে.
★ since এর আগের অংশ present হলে পরের অংশ past indefinite তথা (V2) হয়।
★ since এর আগের অংশ past indefinite হলে পরের অংশ past perfect তথা (had+V3) হয়।

যেমন: It is about a year since we met last/our father died.
Many years have passed since I passed the SSC exam.
Two years passed since I had met last with you.

4. Use of "As if/ As though"

★ এর অর্থ যেন।
★ এর দ্বারা সাধারণত কোনো অবাস্তব বা অপূরনীয় অর্থ প্রকাশ করে।
★ As if/ As though বাক্যে sub-ordinating conjunction হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
★ As if/ As though এর পরে সবসময় past tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। তবে be verb হিসেবে sub+were বসে।

Structure:

i. First clause [present]+as if/as though+2nd clause [past indefinite]

ii)First clause [past indefinite]+as if/as though+2nd clause [past perfect]

যেমন: The man pretends as if he knew everything.
She acts as if / as though she were rich.
The boy pretended as if he had known everything.

5. Use of "Though/ Although"

★ এর অর্থ 'যদিও'
★ though/although দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি clause পরস্পর বিপরীত অর্থ প্রকাশ করে।
★ সাধারণত though/although যুক্ত বাক্য complex sentence এ হয়।
★ এর দ্বরা যুক্ত দুটি clause এর tense সাধারণত একই হয়।

যেমন: Though he is rich, he is very miser.
Though he is poor, he is honest.
They have no pride, although they are rich.
Though it was raining heavily, you went out without an umbrella.

6. Use of "So....that"

★so…that অর্থ 'এতই যে'
★so….that একটি correlative conjunction হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং that এর পরের clause সাধারণত কাজের ফলাফল নির্দেশ করে।
★so এবং that এর মাঝে একটি মাত্র adjective/adverb বসে।
★Tense ও person অনুযায়ী that এর পরে sub+can/could/may/might+(not) বসে।

যেমন: She is so poor that she can not buy foods.
He is so honest that he can not commit this crime.
Salam was so wicked that nobody could trust him.
He was so lazy that he might not pass the exam.

7. Use of "Too....to"

★এর অর্থ 'এতই যে'
★too….to সাধারণত negative অর্থ প্রকাশ করে তাই too….to যুক্ত বাক্যে not বা no ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
★too এর পরে একটি adjective/adverb বসে কিন্তু to+v1 বসে।

যেমন: He is too weak to walk.
She was too poor to buy food.
The sum is too difficult for him to solve.

8. Use of "Not only....but also"

★এর অর্থ 'শুধু এটা নয়…আরও কিছু/ওটাও'
★দুটি একই জাতীয় clause-কে একত্রে প্রকাশ কারার জন্য Not only….but also ব্যবহার করা হয়।

যেমন: He is not only a cricketer but also e singer.
I bought not only a book but also a pen.
Fariha not only wrote the letter but also posted it.

9. Use of "Until/Till"

★এর অর্থ 'যতক্ষণ পর্যন্ত না/ যতক্ষণে না'
★Till এর পরে negative/affirmative উভয় clause -ই বসে। কিন্তু Until এর পরে negative clause বসে না।
★Until/Till এর পূর্ববর্তী clause টি present/future tense হলে পরবর্তী clause টি present tense হয়.
★Until/Till এর পূর্ববর্তী clause টি past tense হলে পরবর্তী clause টি past tense হয়.

যেমন: Wait here until I come back. Wait here until the rain stops. Will you wait till I return? We waited for him until he came back.

10. Use of "Lest"

★এর অর্থ 'পিছু ভয়/নতুবা' ★এই word টি সাধারণত কোনো ভয়ের/বিপদের/ক্ষতির আশংকা বুঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। ★Lest যুক্ত clause এ sub+should/might+v1 বসে। ★যেহেতু এটি না বোধক অর্থ প্রকাশ করে তাই lest এর পরে no/not বসে না। (তবে negative word বসতে পারে)

যেমন: Work hard lest you should fail in the exam. Work hard lest you should earn less money. Run fast lest you might miss the train.

11. Use of "Would you mind"

★এর অর্থ 'আপনি কি কিছু মনে করবেন ' ★সাধারণত কোনো ব্যক্তিকে কোনো কিছু করার অনুরোধ করতে বা কিছু করার জন্য অনুমতি নিতে 'would you mind' phrase টি ব্যবহৃত হয়। ★Would you mind এর পরে verb+ing বসে। তবে অনুমতির ক্ষেত্রে If clause ও বসানো যায়।

যেমন: Would you mind telling us a ghost story? Would you mind visiting my parents house with me? Would you mind if I opened the window? Would you mind lending me your pen?

12. Use of "Since / As / Because (কারণ নির্দেশক)"

★Since/As/Because দ্বারা 'কারণ' বুঝায়। ★তবে Since/As অর্থ 'যেহেতু' এবং Because অর্থ 'কারণ'। ★সাধারণত বাক্যের মধ্যে যে clause টি দ্বারা কারণ বুঝায় তার পূর্বে Since/As/Because বসে। তবে যে কারণটি জানা তার পূর্বে Since/As এবং যে কারণটি অজানা তার পূর্বে Because বসে। ★উভয় clause এর tense একই থাকে।

যেমন: Since/As you did not study well, you failed in the exam. As you walk slowly, you miss the bus/you will miss the bus. Everybody respects him as/because he honest. We all believed him as he never told lies.

13. Use of "Unless"

★এর অর্থ 'যদি না' ★এটি সাধারণত if+not অর্থে বাক্যের মধ্যে বসে। ★Unless যুক্ত clause টি দ্বারা শর্ত প্রকাশ পায় এবং পরবর্তী clause টি দ্বারা ফলাফল প্রকাশ পায়। ★Unless negative অর্থ প্রকাশ করে তাই unless যুক্ত বাক্যে no/not বসে না। তবে negative word বসানো যায়। ★Unless যুক্ত clause টি present হলে পরের clause এ sub+shall/will/can/may/should+v1 বসে। ★Unless যুক্ত clause টি past হলে পরের clause এ sub+would/could/might+v1 বসে।

যেমন: Unless the man works hard, he will not shine in life. You will fail in the exam unless you study well. Unless we started earlier, we would miss the bus.

14. Use of "Would rather"

★এর অর্থ 'বরং'' ★সাধারণত দুটি গ্রহনযোগ্য বা অগ্রহনযোগ্য অবস্থার মধ্যে তুলনা করতে would rather ব্যবহৃত হয়। ★তবে এ জাতীয় বাক্যে তুলনা প্রকাশে than ও বসে। ★Would rather+v1 হয়। ★Would rather এর পরে to বসে না। তবে negative অর্থ প্রকাশ করলে would rather এর পরে not বসে।

যেমন: I would rather read a book than watch television. I would rather than beg. You would rather study than sleep.

15. Use of "Would that / I wish"

★এর অর্থ 'যদি এমন হতো' ★এটি দ্বারা unreal condition প্রকাশ পায়। ★সাধারণত অবাস্তব ইচ্ছা, আকাংখা ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করতে Would that/ I wish ব্যবহৃত হয়। ★এ জাতীয় বাক্যে verb এর past form হয়। তবে be verb হিসেবে were/could be বসে।

যেমন: I wish I were a king. I wish I saw him. Would that he could be a bird.

★এর অর্থ 'যখন' ★এটি দ্বারা সময় নির্দেশ করে। ★একই সময়ে দুটি কার্য চলমান এরূপ sentence এ while বসে। ★While এর পরে verb থাকলে verb+ing হয়। ★While এর পরে sub থাকলে past continuous tense হয় তথা sub+was/were+verb+ing বসে।

যেমন: I saw him while walking in the street. He called me while I was sleeping. The farmer saw a snake while he was working in the garden.

★এর অর্থ 'যদি' ★ If যুক্ত বাক্যকে conditional sentence বলে। ★If যুক্ত clause অনিশ্চিত শর্ত প্রকাশ করে এবং পরবর্তী clause দ্বারা ফলাফল প্রকাশ পায়। ★If যুক্ত clause টি present হলে,পরের clause টি present conditional হয়। ★If যুক্ত clause টি past indefinite হলে, পরের clause টি past conditional হয়। ★If যুক্ত clause টি past perfect হলে, পরের clause টি perfect conditional হয়। ★If যদি 'were/had' অর্থে বসে, তখন পরবর্তী clause টি 2nd conditional হয়।

Note: There are 3 types of Conditionals:

Present Conditional: sub+shall/will/can/may+v1

Past Conditional: sub+would/could/might+v1

Perfect Conditional: sub+would have/could have/might have+v3

যেমন: If you want, I will help you. If you give me the permission, I will visit there. If you studied attentively, you would pass in the exam. If you Was/Were I rich men, I could help the poor. If you had started earlier, you would not have miss the train.

18. Use of "Before & After"

★সাধারণত before এর পূর্বে past perfect tense(sub+had+v3) এবং পরে past indefinite tense(sub+v2) হয়। ★সাধারণত after এর পরে past perfect tense(sub+had+v3) এবং পূর্বে past indefinite tense(sub+v2) হয়।]

যেমন: He had exercised heart and soul before he took part in the competition. He took part in the competition after he had exercised heart and soul.

19. Use of "No sooner....than/hardly had....when/before & scarcely had....when/before"

★এগুলোকে correlative conjunction বলে। ★এগুলো সাধারণত 'যেতে না যেতে', 'করতে না করতে', 'পৌঁছাতে না পৌঁছাতে' অর্থ প্রকাশ করে। ★এবং কোনো কাজ করতে না করতেই বা শেষ হতে না হতেই আরেকটা কাজ উপনীত হওয়া অর্থে এই conjunction গুলো ব্যবহৃত হয়। ★সাধারণত এইসব conjunction যুক্ত বাক্য দুটি কাজের উল্লেখ থাকে। প্রথম কাজটি past perfect tense হয় এবং দ্বিতীয় কাজটি past indefinite tense হয়।

যেমন: No sooner had the teacher entered the classroom, the students stood up. Scarcely had we reached the stadium when/before the game started. Hardly had we taken shelter under a big tree when/before it started raining.

Note: Here, you can complete any random sentences using phrases, clauses, relative pronouns or proverbs. But you should remember that what you build so far should be meaningful and your sentence must be grammatically correct otherwise you will not get marks.
